Hasan Atiyeh and Ajay Kumar, Associate Professors of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, Oklahoma State University (OSU), are the recipients of a two-year USDA-NIFA grant, $150,000 each, through the South Central Sun Grant Program’s (SC-SGP) regional competitive grants program.
Dr. Atiyeh’s project on “Butanol Production with High Yield and Carbon Conversion Using Novel Biocatalysts” is in collaboration with Thaddeus Eziji, Associate Professor of Animal Sciences, Ohio State University. The project aims to increase butanol yield by more than 30 percent and improve the economics of production through a novel carbon conversion process and use of lignocellulosic biomass.
Dr. Kumar’s project on “Low temperature plasma gasification to utilize diverse carbonaceous feedstocks is a joint effort of OSU and University of California-Merced led by Gerardo Diaz, Associate Professor of School of Engineering. Prakashbhai Bhoi, postdoctoral fellow of Kumar’s laboratory will also assist the team in developing a novel gasification combined with non-thermal plasma hybrid technology that aims to increase syngas yield and eliminate syngas tar generated from various carbonaceous resources.
